The Alliance for Youth and America's Promise in partnership with the leading national broadcast networks, hopes to recruit a large number of mentors this month. Over the last several months, BBBS has been involved in two other national initiatives.

In July, President Bush announced that Big Brothers Big Sisters and the nation's four leading service organizations -Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions and Optimists would work together to enroll one million volunteers over the next five years. And, on Dec. 6, AARP's national "Day of Service," Big Brothers Big Sisters was one of eight community service organizations nationwide recommended by AARP to its members as ways to become involved in their communities. To stimulate a national conversation about mentoring, the campaign encourages the general public to think about mentors in their own lives. The initiative's slogan is "Who mentored you?" and the call to action is two-fold: thank and reconnect with people who mentored you, and pass on the need for more mentors for young people.

The mentoring initiative was conceived by the Harvard Men toring Project working with the National Mentoring Partnership, a national database directory and referral system through which caring adults are linked to mentoring opportunities in their communities. The White House Office of National Drug Control Police is among other organizations also involved. Carlisle native navigates ship r5 fir? ff ii 1 KJp xi? Pet of the Week ABOARD the USS BATAAN -The son of a Carlisle couple is among the United States military personnel involved in Operation Enduring Freedom, aimed at combating terrorism. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Bruce A. Apgar, son of Bruce and Kathleen Apgar of Carlisle, is a naval officer on board the USS Bataan (LHD 5), an amphibious assault ship that was deployed in October from Norfolk, as part of the USS Bataan Amphibious Readv Group.

The' USS Shreveport (LPD 12), an amphibious transport dock, and USS Whidbey Island (LSD 41), a dock landing ship, also are 'in the group. For Apgar, the ship's navigator, and the sailors currently supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in the southwest Asia region, the circumstances of this six-month mission are anything but business as usual especially the recent holiday season. Apgar says he missed spending time with his wife, the former Karin Quinn, and two sons during the holidays. "I enjoy participating in church events and visiting our extended family," says Apgar, a 1983 graduate of Boiling Springs High School. Amphibious assault ships like Bataan are called upon to perform as primary landing ships for assault operations of Marine expeditionary units.

These ships use Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC), conventional landing craft and helicopters to move Marine assault forces ashore. Amphibious warships are uniquely designed to support assault from the sea against defended positions ashore. Bataan, one of the largest amphibious ships in the world, carries a detachment of almost 2,000 U.S. Marines, more than 50 AV-8B Harrier attack planes and CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters, and is home to a crew of more than 1 ,000 sailors, all responsible for fulfilling the ship's mission. "I am the navigator for the ship and the Amphibious Ready Group," says Apgar, 36.

"I am responsible for planning voyages and ensuring the three ships of the ARG arrive to assigned missions safely and on time," adds Apgar who joined the U.S. Navy in January 1983. ml Navy Lt. Cmdr. Bruce A.
