Monday, March 9, 1998, The Sentinel, Carlisle, Pa. A5 ourning begins for shooting victims COLCHESTER, Conn. (AP) Flags Hew at half staff today as this small New England town paid tribute to the four people who were killed at the Connecticut Lottery headquarters by an enraged co-worker. "It's just a terrible thing," said Nancy LaFlamme, a neighbor of Michael Logan, a lottery information services officer who was killed in Friday's rampage. "It's mostly the kids and the wife that you think about, that we are praying for." The mourning extended to the home of the gunman, accountant Matthew Beck, 35, who killed himself as police closed in.

His 71 -year-old father, Donald, sobbed as he recalled to the Hartford Courant how he saved his son's life after Matthew Beck tried to commit suicide by overdosing on medication last year. "That might have been a mistake," he said, rocking slightly. "That might have been a mistake." Matthew Beck had gone years without a promotion at the lottery, then filed a grievance in August, one year after he was shifted from accounting to data processing work. After taking a stress-related medical leave in October and undergoing treatment, he returned to work Feb. 25.

He also had approached at least two newspaper reporters in recent months to claim the lottery exaggerated potential winnings to spur ticket sales, and that store clerks were taking winning scratch tickets for themselves by cracking the computer system. Although Beck had been depressed over his job, as he left for work Friday morning he gave his family no hint of the violence he would unleash. "Is there a book, a person, a place where we can get an answer where it all makes sense? No, we come here and we seek (God)," Father Michael Giannitelli said during his homily. "Because we love God does not mean that bad things will not happen." More memorial services in honor of the victims were planned for this week. Donald Beck recalled how his son had recently moved back into his family's home, where police found a collection of weapons, including two semiautomatic assault weapons.

1 "If he didn't have access to the gun, I'm sure he would have tried a knife or a baseball bat," Donald Beck told the Courant. "But if he didn't have access to a firearm, the damage might have been less. I will regret that to my dying day." He woke up early, fed his cat and greeted his father. Dressed casually in jeans, he slung his black bag over his shoulder and headed out the door with the parting words of "Well, I'm off." He made plans to see "Titanic" with a friend that night. Soon after, he stabbed and shot Logan, who had denied his grievance.

He then shot Linda Mlynarczyk, the lottery's chief financial officer with whom he had recently discussed his new duties. He told her "bye bye" before firing three times, witnesses said. He then shot Frederick Rubelmann III, to whom he had once appealed for help, before chasing down Otho Brown, the lottery president, in the parking lot. On Sunday, parishioners crowded into Sunday services at St. Andrews Roman Catholic Church in Colchester, a town of about 12,000 people.

But he paused when he saw a woman dropping off a small bundle with dangling little legs. i The animals have been listed as endangered since 1966, victims of the whaling industry in the first half of the century. Scientists believe there once were 400,000 blue whales in the world's oceans, but now only about 12,000. The adult blue whale grows to as much as 110 feet and can weigh about 200 tons.

It is the biggest animal in the world, and one of the biggest ever to have lived. There are only about 300 such whales in the Northwest Atlantic. Scientists from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Harvard University, the Smithsonian Institution and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology all intended to take organ and tissue samples from the animal. MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (AP) The carcass of a blue whale weighing up to 40 tons was towed ashore Saturday, one of the few times the rare, endangered animal has been available for hands-on study.

"For whale scientists, this is virtually a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," said Dana Hartley, coordinator of the Marine Mammal Stranding Network of the National Oceano-graphic and Atmospheric Administration of Woods Hole, Mass. The whale, which was not full grown, was most likely killed after being hit by a ship, researchers said. Its carcass was spotted Tuesday by the Coast Guard, which towed the 67-foot-long whale approximately seven miles to a beach along Narra-gansett Bay. It was below freezing, and the boy was dressed only in a T-shirt and diaper. Moments later, Quinlan said, the woman emerged from behind a utility pole with a request: "Can I have the baby back?" "I saw her, she looked at me, and it seemed like she knew she made a mistake," said Quinlan, 32, who has been working at the museum for more than four years. Quinlan refused.

He held the child until police arrived minutes later and arrested the woman, 28-year-old Cassie Somers from Solon, Maine. She faces charges of cruelty and neglect to children, child abandonment and driving r.with suspended license. Math whiz wins science contest BOSTON (AP) With the courthouse repaired, prosecutors and attorneys for Louise Woodward are asking the state's highest court to decide whether the British au pair should head back to prison or back home. The hearing was postponed Friday when a transformer exploded and started a fire in the basement of the Suffolk County courthouse.

The damage was repaired over the weekend and the power was restored. Ms. Woodward, now 20, was accused of violently shaking and slamming 8-month-old Matthew Eappen, a baby in her care, on Feb. 4, 1997. He died five days later.

Prosecutors want to restore the verdict of the jury that found her guilty of second-degree murder. That charge can bring a sentence of up to 20 years in prison. If the seven members of the Supreme Judicial Court do not reinstate that verdict, prosecutors want them to sentence Ms. Woodward to more jail time. The judge who presided over her case, Hiller Zobel, reduced her conviction to involuntary manslaughter and sentenced her to the 279 days she had already been jailed.

That set her free, but she was ordered to stay in Massachusetts, while appeals are heard. 1 i 1 Ms. Woodward wants her criminal record wiped clean. It could take months for the justices to rule on the appeals. ana's Park Tudor School a year early.

"I've exhausted most of the educational opportunities in my area," he said. Mihelich said he taught himself much of the mathematical knowledge he used to complete his project, which took him 17 typewritten pages to explain. "I have accumulated a rather large collection of mathematical books that fill many shelves in my room," he said. WASHINGTON (AP) Christopher Mihelich filled 17 pages with words to explain a theory of numbers that turned him into a prize-winning mathematician.

"You can actually prove things in mathematics," the high school junior from Indianapolis said. "I like the perfect certainty and also the deviousness it takes to prove things with perfect certainty." Mihelich won the $40,000 top prize Sunday in the 57th Westinghouse Science Talent Search with a system of operations in number theory. Nearly 1,600 high school students OTtered the scholarship' competition. Ten winners were announced at the National Academy of Sciences. The young math whiz, who received the prize on his 17th birthday, began taking college math courses as an eighth grader.
