Storm buries Midwest in snow The worst storm of the year blew 18 inches of snow into 6-foot drifts in the Midwest, plunging temperatures below zero, stranding thousands of motorists and rendering snowplows useless on car-littered roads. The "terrible weather" raised to 38 the number of deaths in a week of storms. In the Southwest, a new storm began building, threatening to dump a foot of snow on the Texas Panhandle overnight. Snow fell across Arizona, New Mexico, west Texas and southeast Colorado. A van collided with a school bus on a snow-slick road in the Chicago suburb of Northfield Thursday, injuring about 16 people, one critically.

"The people were pretty shook up," Police Chief Richard Klatzco said. "The kids were real frightened. Luckily a lady in a nearby house took all the children in and gave them comfort." Highways in parts of South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Iowa closed Thursday as blinding snows spread, sending motorists and truck drivers to motels, truck stops and armories to wait for winds to die down. Snowplows were brought to a virtual halt because drivers could not see where they were going. Roads became littered with hundreds of abandoned vehicles as the storm defeated snow removal efforts.

"It's terrible, terrible weather. Visibility is zero," said Darlene Thompson, a worker at the Boondocks USA truckstop on Interstate 35 east of Fort Dodge, Iowa, where more than 50 motorists were stranded. "There's still cars and trucks stuck on the ramps." The week's death toll mounted to 38 after a major snowstorm swept from the Southwest to the Great Lakes and tornadoes and rain doused the South. Six deaths were reported in Kansas and Minnesota, five in Nebraska, four each in Iowa and Illinois, three in Louisiana, Florida and Wisconsin, two in Michigan and one each in Alabama and New Mexico. In sharp contrast, spring-like weather settled over part of the Northeast as the mercury zoomed to a record 59 degrees in New York City, and 47 degrees in Portland, Maine.

Albany hit 50 degrees and Binghamton, N.Y., reached 48. The Midwest storm left a cavalcade of abandoned vehicles in Iowa. Bitter winds of 40 mph forced law enforcement authorities to close sections of major highways in nearly 20 locations around the state. Fayette, Iowa, received 12 inches of snow, Des Moines and Fort Dodge 11 inches. The winds plunged chill factors to 40 below zero and piled drifts 5 feet deep.

Many schools and more than a half dozen highways closed in Nebraska. Wind chills plummeted to 30-below zero in some areas. West central Wisconsin was buried under 18.5 inches of snow and La Crosse reported a record 13 inch snowfall. Navajos hit hard by bad weather WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. (UPI) Relief crews trying to get food and fuel to Navajo families stranded by mud today faced the prospect of poor visibility preventing helicopter flights and 6 inches of snow keeping trucks out of the reservation.

Navajo Division of Public Safety spokesman Peter Borrow reported the first death attributed to the weather Thursday. New Mexico Gov. Toney Anaya sent Army National Guard helicopters to nearby Gallup Thursday but bad weather kept them grounded. Helicopters from the Arizona National Guard also were grounded in Phoenix. Tribal Fire Chief Mel Goodwin said he hoped visibility would be good today so helicopters could bring in food, hay for livestock, firewood and other needed supplies.

Six inches of snow was expected. Winter weather has. isolated hundreds of Navajo families in remote areas of their homeland, the largest Indian reservation in the country. The reservations sprawls across northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico and a corner of southeastern Utah. Goodwin said winter travel on the reservation had been made more difficult than usual because of a series of early snowfalls that hit before the ground froze and turned roads into rivers of mud up to 18 inches deep.

He said civilian four-wheel-drive and military six-wheel-drive vehicles that have provided most of the relief were back in action Thursday. He said there were "about 600 affected families, mainly in New Mexico, ranging from two to 10 people in a family." He said the body of Johnny Davis, 50, was found early Thursday about 300 yards from his home near Pinedale, N.M., a small reservation community northeast of Gallup.
