According to the magazine news articles, these regular veterinary visits for such things as pregnancy checks, removing extra teats, and dehorning, really pay their herd owner in regular calving intervals and small calf losses and minimum "down time" for the herd. Record Keeping It won't be long until Uncle Sam will be notifying us of the approaching income tax deadline. Have your farm records been kept in a manner that provides for a quick and easy summary? If not, perhaps you would find a Pennsylvania State University correspondence course on farm accounting to be of value.

Record keeping is a chore that is detested by most farmers even though some of them would derive more income from the time devoted to this task than that spent proportionately on the remainder of their enter prises. Ihe time required daily to maintain records is insignificant. The solution is to establish a routine that will get the job done. We know of one farm wife who cooperated with her husband in this task by daily placing the farm account book beside his place at their evening meal. It was a gentle reminder for him to make the few daily entries whle the details were fresh in his mind.

The leaves will soon turn yellow and fall. Then store the dried-off plant in a cool, dark basement at 50 to 60 degrees until April or May and water it lightly. Just give it enough water to keep the roots and stems from drying out. In May, cut the stems back 3-to 5-inches, and repot the poinsettia. Then put the plant in a warm, sunny place in your yard and keep it watered and fertilized during the wummer.

Before cool weather sets in next fall, bring the plant inside again and put in in a south window where it will get lots of light. If plants are to flower they must be kept in darkness from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. from the first of October to Thanksgiving. Milk Output Up Over '70 HARRISBURG Pennsylvania milk production in November was 555 million pounds, up three per cent from the same month last year but seasonally lower than last month by seven per cent, the Pennsylvania Crop Reporting Service said.

Milk production per cow for November, at 795 pounds, represented a 30 pound increase over Nov. 1970, but was a 55-pound decrease from last month. U.S. milk production in November is estimated at 8,975 million pounds, a 1.5 increase over a year earlier. Daily average production was down one per cent from October, the same decrease as a year ago.

Production for the first 11 months of 1971 was one per cent more than the same period a year ago. F0R RELIABLE PLUMBING AND HEATING SERVICE New Installations Remodeling Repairing CAll 5Hi K. The formal presentation will be made Saturday at a Master Farmer luncheon in Harrisburg, at which time I will present a slide presentation of the highlights of the Norman Mains farm operation. Winter Storms Do you have a stand-by generator to provide electric current next winter, if a severe storm disables power lines and eliminates all current from your farm? Anyone who is not prepared for such an emergency should give it serious consideration. There are several ways to provide emergency power. Each farm should adopt the one that best suits his needs. We don't realize how much we depend on electricity until we are deprived of it.

When we had only 15 or 20 cows to milk by hand the absence of electric current was not acute, but with 50 to 100 cows milking it's an impossible situation. Little Things Count It might be well for dairymen to pause and reflect just a bit. If you didn't reach your production goals, perhaps it was because of the little things you overlooked. Ask yourself these questions: Were my cows comfortable at all times or were their stalls too short or narrow? Did a drinking cup clog up so "bossy" had no water for a spell? Did I feed forage as often as I should for best consumption? And, oh yes what about grain? Cows in early lactation need lots of energy in order to shell out the milk that's bred into them. Did my herd get this extra grain around calving time and for a period after calving? Am I gentle with my cows? Maybe I should buy that brush my county agent suggested and try brushing my cows daily.

Maybe they will respond to TLC (tender-loving-care). "You know, I'm going to throw that old hoe handle away and LUMBER BEETEM LUMBER CO. 400-500 E.
