A2 The Sentinel Local Obituaries Friday, June 7, 2013 Obituaries Tonya L. Weidenhammer Mary Lucille 'Lucy' Swartz Tonya L. Weidenhammer, 39, of Carlisle, PA died on Thursday, June 6, 2013 at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Al-lentown, PA with her loving parents by her side. She was born in Harrisburg, PA on Sept. 14, 1973 to Thomas L.

and Carol J. Shorten-carrier Zeiders of Mt. Holly Springs, PA. Tonya had worked at the former Book of The Month Club in Mechanicsburg, PA. In her leisure time, she enjoyed reading all types of books and novels.

She was a graduate of Carlisle High School. Mary Lucille "Lucy" Swartz, 74, of Carlisle, went home to be with her Lord and Savior after a short battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS) on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at Cumberland Crossings in Carlisle. Born on Oct. 31, 1938, in Broxton, GA, she was the daughter of the late Edna Smith. On Sept.

20, 1958, Lucy married the late Richard H. "Dick" Swartz in the Beaver Street Baptist Church in Jacksonville, FL. Lucy graduated from Andrew Jackson Senior High School in Jacksonville in 1957. She met Dick when he was stationed there during his time in the Marine Corps and the two married in 1958. They then returned to Dick's native Carlisle, PA, to build a life.

Lucy was one of the original charter members of the Carlisle Baptist Church. She taught glestown Harrisburg, PA 17110, or Carlisle Baptist John Fansler Alden children's Sunday School there for 52 years and sang in the church choir. She was a constant support to Dick in his various business ventures. Lucy loved traveling. Highlights included visiting family in FL, attending reunions, and embarking on adventures out West, to Re-hoboth Beach and in the Caribbean.

She enjoyed taking day trips with her girls. One of Lucy's greatest joys in life was spending time with family, especially her grandchildren. She was very active, and enjoyed participating in group exercise classes. In her earlier years, she was an avid bowler. Lucy was always willing to serve others, and her southern hospitality knew no limits.

She is survived by her three daughters, Dottie L. (Mark) Wettstein, Karen L. (Kenneth) Stum, and Amy S. (John) Bitner, all of Carlisle; Rosemary was a dedicated and caring teacher. Throughout her life, she was a great gardener, amateur botanist, birder, and enjoyer of the out of doors.

She had a number of serious hobbies including painting tollware, quilting, and genealogical and historical research. Until very recently, she always had at least one project underway. She was a long-time member of the Juniata Valley Quilt Guild and the Tuesday Afternoon Bridge Club. She was a memorable cook and baker. Her grandchildren loved "granny food" and she loved making fried fish breakfasts, ham loaf, cakes, and pies for them.

When she and Bob were much younger, they would pack up their four kids and go on camping trips; he would fish and she would cook up amazing meals over a campfire. Later, after they had both retired, they traveled widely Willard F. Linda McMaster (and husband, Richard) of Sligo, PA; grandchildren, Jeffrey Snyder (and wife, Angela) of Carrollton, VA, Jennifer Cox (and husband, Terry) of Shippensburg, PA, Eric McMaster (and wife, Kim-berly) of Richmond VA, and Carrie McMaster of Miami, FL; great-grandchildren, Aaron Cox (and wife, Megan), Matthew and Andrew Snyder, Jacob Cox, and Rivers McMaster; one brother, Floyd Bowlby of Danbury, CT; and one sister, Betty Hostetler of Somerset; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Charlotte (Walter) Bowlby; an infant daughter; an infant grandson, Jesse McMaster; and one brother, Jay Bowlby. Friends will be received John Fansler Alden, 69, of Carlisle passed away suddenly at home on Saturday, May 4, 2013.

He was born in Cleveland, OH on Sept. 16, 1943. John was the son of the late E. Ames and Mildred (Fansler) Alden, and brother of the late Howard R. Alden (surviving wife, Elva).

John is survived by his best friend, Martha Harry; brother, Robert (and wife, Diane) Alden of McLean, VA; and nieces and nephews. John served in the Navy during the Vietnam War, and later in the Navy Reserves. He spent most of his life as a journalist working at various newspapers. He also did some time professional truck driving to explore the United States. John loved camping, fishing, gardening, volunteering and singing.

Johnson, 87, died Thursday, May 30 2013 at the Claremont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Carlisle, PA after a long struggle with Alzheimer's. She was born Nov. 28, 1925 to the late Raymond and Margaret Breece Millay in Columbus, OH and was predeceased by her husband, Lester Johnson.

The family wishes to thank the staff and care givers at the Claremont Nursing Center and to the Grane Hospice for all the special care they gave to their mother until her death. She is survived by three daughters, Lori Rooney (and her husband, Robert) of Carlisle, PA, Janis Bauer of Genoa City, WI, and Carole Harris of Chicago, IL. Mrs. Winder was the widow of Robert L. Winder. She was born in Dulu-th, MN on May 9, 1923 to Charles and Marie Radcliffe Lauthers. She grew up in Chicago, IL where her father was a high school principal.

She earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Oberlin College where she met her husband, Robert Winder. They were married on June 26, 1946 at Oberlin and then moved to Chicago where Rosemary completed a master's degree in zoology at the University of Chicago. Later, she attended Riviere College in Nashua, NH, acquiring a teaching certificate. She taught high school biology in Nashua, elementary school in Elwood, IL, and middle school sciences in Boiling Springs, PA. She Willard F.

Bowlby, 94 of Carlisle, PA passed away at Carlisle Regional Hospital June 3, 2013. Born Jan. 5, 1919, in New Centerville, PA, he was the son of the late Charles Edward and Carrie (Forespring) Bowlby. During World War Willard was in the 101st Airborne and a part of Operation Market Garden. He was injured in Holland by a roadside sniper and was taken prisoner of war in a German occupied Dutch Hospital.

After eight months as a POW, he was rescued by the Allies. Willard was a member of the Somerset Church of the Brethren. Willard is survived by his two daughters, Loretta Snyder (and husband, (William) of Carlisle PAj and She is survived by her parents, Thomas and Carol Zeiders of Mt. Holly Springs; two brothers, David Copenhaver of Greensburg, PA, and Thomas L. Zeiders Jr.

of Harrisburg, PA; and a sister, Ruth Ann Walton of Enola.PA. There will be no services at this time. Interments will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are being handled by the Hollinger Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 501 N.

Burial will be in Waggoners United Methodist Church Cemetery, 1271 Longs Gap Carlisle. They made several trips to the Dakotas where they contacted descendants of Juniata Coun-tians who had moved west during the expansion of the United States and added that information to the files at the Juniata Historical Society. She lived a full and fulfilling life and died without regret. She was not resigned to the loss of independence that had come with advanced old age and she deeply missed her husband, Robert Lee Winder, who preceded her in death by less than six months.

She was preceded in death by two younger brothers, Charles R. and David E. Lauthers. She leaves four children and their spouses, John H. and Mary Lou Winder of Silver Spring, MD, Deborah M.

and Peter Schultz of Lewes, DE, Sally Jo Winder and John McCrea Bowlby from 1 p.m. until the hour of the service at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 8 at Miller Funeral Home and Crematory in Somerset.
